Virginia Highlands is a largely residential neighborhood that has been called Atlanta’s answer to Los Angeles’s Melrose Avenue and New York’s SoHo. This neighborhood centers on the intersection of its namesake avenues, Virginia and North Highland. High rents have banished the starving artist crowd downtown, but in their place have come numerous galleries, representing the city's best mix of modern and folk art.
Shoppers can find almost anything they could imagine in the unique and diverse shops that line the commercial streets of the Highlands. From trend setting apparel, classic to kitschy antiques, folk and pop art, whimsical decorative accessories, natural linens, rare cigars, distinctive art books, gourmet kitchen wares, fine woodworking and gardening tools, unusual fresh flowers, fancy gelatos, do-it-yourself pottery, full-service day spas, fashionable salons, you can spend days on end enjoying the charms of this thriving shopping district.
Young and middle-aged professionals mix easily with a mild influx of students from the nearby university in the Highlands' bars and restaurants. You can find a vibrant nightlife selection in both laid-back atmospheres in pubs to highbrow restaurants and popular brazier joints. There is also a large selection of entertainment in the area, where you may find world- famous musical entertainment at a tiny nightclub, an opening-night party at an art gallery or a gathering of fascinating people at one of the many coffeehouses.
Morningside-Lenox Park is a charming area adjacent to the Highlands. It is reminiscent of an English village, in that its homes are quaint, the lawns are landscaped, the trees are old and stately, the sidewalks in use by kids on bikes and mothers with strollers. Shops and boutiques are close by and the neighborhood association has its own quarterly newsletter.
Part of Morningside-Lenox Park’s success lies in its strong Neighborhood Association. Complete with many committees committed to maintaining the beauty of the city and creating important advances, this organization integrates the members of the community within the important process of maintaining a desirable place to reside.
